Tips of between 15-20% are customary in the U.S. (less at fast-food restaurants). For extremely good service, a tip of up to 25% is recommended.
Customers are expected to tip even for bad service: a 10% tip is a clear sign that service wasn't good enough.
If a gratuity charge is included on the bill, you are not expected to pay extra.
At a bar, a tip of $1 per drink is standard. Leave the dollar bill on the counter for the bartender to take.
Digital tip jars, in which customers choose a suggested tip amount on a touchscreen, are becoming common. Such changes in technology mean a tip is now expected in many places where it wasn't customary before.
