Broadway is the New York street that has traditionally been home to the city's theater district. Whether a show is said to be "on Broadway" or "off Broadway," however, is defined not by the location of the theater, but by its size.

Theaters with 500 or more seats are considered Broadway theaters — so shows performed there are "on Broadway." Theaters that have between 100 and 499 seats are "off Broadway." And any theater with fewer than 100 seats is called "off-off Broadway."
